Implant Treatment

Tooth loss is a significant problem in terms of both aesthetics and health. Missing teeth not only negatively affect chewing function, but can also cause speech disorders, jaw structure deterioration and loss of self-confidence. Although there are various treatment methods to replace missing teeth today, implant treatment stands out as the most durable and natural-looking solution.

Dental implants are one of the treatment methods that permanently replace missing teeth and offer the closest alternative to natural teeth. It is frequently preferred by patients due to both its durability and the comfort it provides. So, what exactly is a dental implant? How is it applied and what advantages does it offer compared to other treatment methods?

What is an Implant?

Tooth loss can cause serious problems both aesthetically and functionally. Today, one of the most permanent and natural solutions for replacing missing teeth is a dental implant. So, what exactly is an implant and how is it applied?

Implants are screw-like artificial roots, usually made of titanium, placed in the jawbone to replace lost teeth. These artificial roots integrate with the jawbone under the gums and mimic the real tooth root. Porcelain or zirconium coatings, which are prepared in the most appropriate way for the person’s natural tooth structure, are added to the implant, achieving a natural tooth appearance both aesthetically and functionally.

Since titanium is a biocompatible material, it is easily accepted by the body and fuses with the jawbone over time. This process is called “osseointegration” and ensures that the implant is firmly attached to the jawbone. A successful osseointegration process ensures that the implant is long-lasting and durable.

Implant treatment can be applied in many different situations, from single tooth loss to complete toothlessness. It offers a more comfortable and natural use compared to traditional bridges and dentures. It also offers a great advantage in terms of protecting dental health, as it allows the replacement of missing teeth without damaging healthy teeth.

Who Can Have an Implant?

Implant treatment can be applied to almost every adult. However, some conditions may affect the probability of implant retention.

  • Adequate Bone Structure: In order for the implant to hold healthily, the jawbone must have sufficient volume and density. If there is bone loss, bone grafting (bone powder addition process) can be done first.
  • General Health Status: Some chronic diseases such as diabetes and osteoporosis can affect the success of implant treatment. Therefore, an evaluation should be made by a specialist before implantation.
  • Oral Hygiene: Regular care and hygiene are necessary after implant treatment. It is recommended that people with gum disease have these diseases treated first.
  • Smoking: Smoking can negatively affect the implant’s fusion with the jawbone. Therefore, individuals who smoke are advised to reduce or quit this habit before starting treatment.

How is an Implant Done?

Implant treatment is a process that consists of several stages and must be carried out meticulously. The completion of the treatment may take several months depending on the patient’s condition. One of the most important factors in this process is the complete integration of the implant with the jawbone. Here is how implant treatment progresses step by step:

  • Examination and Planning

The first step of implant treatment is a detailed examination process. We use imaging methods such as panoramic x-ray and 3D tomography to evaluate the jaw structure and gum health of our patients. At this stage, the density of the jawbone and whether it is sufficient for the implant is determined. If the bone tissue is insufficient, additional procedures such as bone grafting may be required. At the same time, we evaluate whether implant treatment is appropriate by considering the patient’s general health condition.

  • Surgical Procedure (Placement of the Implant)

Implant application is a minor surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia. During the procedure, the gum is opened and a small hole is made in the jawbone where the implant will be placed. Then, the screw-like implant made of titanium is carefully placed in this space. Then, the gum is closed again, stitched, and the healing process begins. For most patients, this procedure is quite comfortable and, apart from a slight pain, no serious discomfort is felt.

  • Osteointegration (Fusion of the Implant with the Bone)

One of the most critical stages for the implant to be long-lasting and durable is the osteointegration process. This refers to the implant integrating with the jawbone and creating a solid foundation like a natural tooth root. During this process, which can usually last 3 to 6 months, the patient’s jawbone grasps the implant and creates a strong bond. A permanent prosthesis is not placed on the implant before osteointegration is completed. During this period, the patient can use a temporary prosthesis to prevent the missing tooth area from looking bad in terms of aesthetics.

  • Temporary and Permanent Prosthesis Application

After osteointegration is completed, the gum is reopened and an intermediate piece called the abutment is placed on the implant. This piece serves as a connection between the implant and the prosthetic tooth. Then, a porcelain or zirconium-coated prosthesis prepared in accordance with the patient’s natural tooth structure and color is fixed on the implant. Thus, the patient has the closest solution to the natural tooth both aesthetically and functionally.

  • Advantages of Implant Treatment

Implant treatment is a method that replaces missing teeth in the most natural and permanent way and stands out from other treatment options thanks to the many advantages it offers. First of all, implants offer the closest alternative to natural teeth in terms of both appearance and use. Problems such as slipping, difficulties during speech or discomfort while eating, which are seen in dentures, are not experienced with implants.

At the same time, when properly cared for, implants can be used for a lifetime and are much more durable than traditional bridges or dentures. Another important advantage is that they protect the jawbone. Missing teeth can cause bone loss over time, but implants prevent this loss by integrating with the jawbone and protect the bone structure. In addition, there is no need to grind down neighboring teeth as in classic bridge treatments; since implant treatment only involves the area where the missing tooth is located, healthy teeth are not damaged.

However, thanks to its strong chewing ability, the patient can easily consume even hard or difficult to chew foods. Considering all these advantages, implant treatment stands out as one of the most ideal solutions for people with missing teeth by offering aesthetics and functionality together. However, since each individual’s tooth structure is different, it is important to consult a dentist to determine whether the implant is suitable.

Implant Prices

Implant prices may vary depending on the quality and brand of the material used, the experience of the dentist, the city where the clinic is located, the patient’s jawbone structure and additional treatment requirements. While high-quality implant brands are more durable and long-lasting, there are also affordable options, but their long-term success may vary.

The cost may increase when additional procedures such as bone grafting (adding bone powder) or sinus lift are required. The experience of the treating physician and the technologies used are also important factors affecting the price. Therefore, it would be the best approach to make a choice by considering not only the price but also the long-term success rate and treatment quality.
